If the pain persists, see a doctor. If your hammertoe is left untreated, it may become rigid, making the following non-surgical treatments less of an option:
- Padding and taping – these are many times the first step of treating a hammertoe; padding helps minimize pain and taping may change the imbalance around the toes allowing for pain and stress relief
- Medication – anti-inflammatory medicines and cortisone injections can help with acute pain and inflammation
- Orthotics – custom shoe inserts may be prescribed by your doctor to help relieve symptoms and prevent the hammertoe from becoming worse
If the hammertoe is rigid, surgery may be the only option. Please see our menu for information on Surgical Treatment options.
